A fractional CTO for the decisions that are costly to reverse
A fractional CTO is a senior technical leader who works with you part-time on architecture, stack, hiring, the roadmap and investor questions. Two CTOs fill that role here. Light advisory costs $90 an hour for up to about 10 hours a week, and the part-time CTO seat costs $50 an hour from about 20 hours a week; when you hire two or more of our engineers, the CTO seat is free.
Talk to experts nowWhat a fractional CTO does
The CTO’s job, sized to the hours your company needs.
Strategy and roadmap
A technical plan tied to the business plan, so the build order follows what the company has to prove at its next milestone.
Architecture and stack
Stack, hosting and build-or-buy calls made early, while changing them is still cheap.
Team and hiring
Roles defined, engineers interviewed, and a way of working that new hires can grow into.
Delivery process
Sprint rhythm, code review, releases and on-call, set up once and run every week.
Security and risk
Access control, data handling, and the vendor and dependency risks that come up in due diligence.
Investors and due diligence
Technical answers for a funding round, a data room or an acquirer’s review.
The CTOs who hold the seat
One of these two people leads every fractional CTO engagement at 2muchcoffee.

How an engagement runs
Four steps, from a first read of your plan to the handover.
Assessment (1-2 weeks)
The CTO goes through the business plan and whatever exists so far (code, team, vendors), then lists the decisions that come first. One of the two CTOs takes the first call, free of charge.
Technical roadmap (2-4 weeks)
A written plan for architecture, hiring and delivery, in the order the business needs them, ready to share with your board or investors.
Weekly leadership (ongoing)
Planning, architecture reviews and hiring calls on a set weekly rhythm, with the CTO in your leadership meetings and US business-hours overlap.
Handover (2-4 weeks)
When a full-time CTO or a team lead steps in, we hand over the roadmap, the reasons behind each decision and the open risks, in writing.
When the plan needs hands
Each part of the roadmap that needs building has a team here that builds it.
- AI code audit & code review servicesA senior review of the code you already have, human-written or AI-built, before the roadmap builds on it.
- AI integration servicesLLM and agent features added to the product you already run.
- AI agent development companyAgents built as production services, evaluated and guardrailed.
- Hire AI engineersSenior AI engineers who join your team for RAG and agent work, dedicated or embedded.
- Mobile app and web development for startupsWeb and mobile builds from MVP to public release.
When to bring in a fractional CTO
Four signals that it is time to hire a fractional CTO.
A non-technical founding team
Someone has to make the stack and hiring calls before the first engineer joins, and before a vendor settles them by default.
A product built by an agency, freelancers or an AI tool
The code works, and now someone on your side has to decide how it is built and where it goes next.
A funding round or due diligence ahead
Investors and acquirers ask technical questions that need a specific answer from someone who knows the system.
A team that outgrew its lead developer
Hiring, process and architecture now need a dedicated leader alongside the code.
Fractional, interim or full-time CTO
Three ways to fill the CTO seat, compared on time, fit, cost and how each one ends.
Part-time, set hours each week
Full-time for a fixed period
Full-time, permanent

Fractional CTO services, answered
The questions founders and leadership teams ask before they bring in a part-time CTO.
What is a fractional CTO?
A fractional CTO, sometimes called an outsourced CTO, is a senior technical leader who works for your company part-time and makes the calls a full-time CTO would make: architecture, stack, hiring, the delivery process and the technical roadmap. You pay for the hours a week the work needs, instead of a full-time salary. At 2muchcoffee two CTOs hold the seat: Dmytro Melnychenko and Oleg Logvin.
What does a fractional CTO do?
A fractional CTO turns the business plan into technical decisions and sees them through. In practice the CTO ties the roadmap to the next milestone; makes the stack, hosting and build-or-buy calls while they are cheap to change; defines roles and interviews engineers; runs sprints, code review, releases and on-call; keeps access, data handling and vendor risk in order; and answers the technical questions in a funding round, a data room or an acquirer’s review.
When does a startup or a growing company need a fractional CTO?
When technical decisions arrive faster than anyone on the team can make them. Four situations usually bring a company there: a non-technical founding team that has to make stack and hiring calls before the first engineer joins; a product built by an agency, freelancers or an AI tool that now needs someone on your side to direct it; a funding round or due diligence where investors ask technical questions; and an established team that has outgrown its lead developer and needs a dedicated leader for hiring, process and architecture.
How many hours a week does a fractional CTO work?
Light advisory runs up to about 10 hours a week, and the part-time CTO seat runs from about 20 hours a week. Between 10 and 20 hours a week, we quote each case. You can move between tiers as the work changes, with more hours while the roadmap is written and fewer once it runs. A seat usually starts within two weeks and runs month to month.
How much does a fractional CTO cost?
At 2muchcoffee, light advisory costs $90 an hour for up to about 10 hours a week, and the part-time CTO seat costs $50 an hour from about 20 hours a week, so the larger seat has the lower hourly rate. Between 10 and 20 hours a week, we quote each case. When you hire two or more of our engineers, the CTO seat is free for as long as two or more of them are on the team, and project management comes free or at a flat monthly rate. In that seat the CTO sets the technical direction for their work. For the right startup, the seat can also be paid in equity or a mix of cash and equity.
Fractional, interim or full-time CTO, or a consultant: which one fits us?
A fractional CTO fits when you need someone to make the architecture, stack and hiring calls for part of the week. An interim CTO covers a sudden gap in leadership, full-time for a fixed period. A full-time CTO, paid with salary, benefits and usually equity, fits a team that needs a technical leader every day. A consultant advises on a defined question and hands the decision back to you, while a fractional CTO makes the decisions and answers for the results. The time to move to a full-time hire is when the roadmap and the team need that leader in the room all week, and a fractional CTO can then hand the seat over with the plan written down.
Can your fractional CTO lead our in-house team or work with an outside agency?
Yes. With an in-house team the CTO runs planning and code review, sets the architecture and helps you hire, the way a full-time CTO would; if an outside agency builds the product, the CTO works on your side of that contract, reviews what ships and holds it to the plan. With a 2muchcoffee team the CTO sets the technical direction for the engineers: that is how we built Notesign, an AI EdTech platform, and its WhisperX speech-to-text engine, with four of our engineers, Oleg Logvin in the CTO seat.
What happens when we are ready to hire a full-time CTO?
We hand the seat over in writing: the roadmap, the architecture decisions and the reasons behind them, the open risks, and the access and accounts the CTO held. Our CTO can also help write the role, interview the candidates and work alongside the new hire for the first weeks.
Do you work for equity?
Yes, for the right startup: the seat can be paid in equity or in a mix of cash and equity. Tell us about the company, its stage and its funding, and we will say whether equity fits.
